NARCISSISM OF SMALL DIFFERENCES
This project is about a chess piece made from wire illustrating a self-chosen conflict.
At our research we went down to the bottom of everyday conflicts. One popular theory about this describes the so-called "narcissism of small differences".
The cause of many conflicts is often the narcissistic attitude of aggressiveness of man, the compulsion of insatiable or diminished self-esteem. Also, mimetical rivalries (common desire of indivisible goods), otherness - e.g. By belonging to certain groups / parties / religions / races / sexual orientation / social status as well as minorities in the general are conflicting factors.
Particularly great potential for conflict arises through the combination of equality and proximity; Opposing thinking and envy are the source of rivalry among each other (see the law of the neighborhood, Manfred Koch-Hillebrecht).
This narcissism of the small differences, thus also distinction through details (according to Sigmund Freud), we take up in our design.
The chess figures of the contracting parties consist of copper-plated welding wire and differ only by a patina. No matter whether Queen or Pawn - each figure is described by the same cube. Only a signet on the top shows the respective ability.
The opposing parties envying each others differences.
The patina can easily be polished and copper can be patinized in a minute. The contrahents are as interchangeable as there conflict is, too.
